Bajša Spinning Bee 2025

Since 2006 the Bajša local community, together with civil society organisations and the “Bratstvo” cultural and arts society, has organised the Prelo (spinning bee) every year. In 2025 we celebrate the 19th Prelo.

The event aims to preserve customs that were kept alive in this multi-ethnic community until the 1970s. In winter people used to visit relatives, and the hostess welcomed guests with fresh flatbread baked in the village oven. After breakfast the women devoted themselves to needlework, singing and making grkljančići (soup pasta), while beans simmered in the oven. The men shelled maize, played cards or made toys from corn cobs, maize stalks or sorghum, to the delight of the little ones.

This year again the teams will bring these traditions to life. During the festive procession, participants will tie their ribbons to the Prelo flag, and after a breakfast of bread, lard, onions, crackling and tea, the competition begins. 17 teams will compete in shelling maize, making traditional soup pasta, making popcorn and knitting, while children will take part in discus throwing. The event also includes a rich cultural programme with choirs and folk dance groups.

The event celebrates togetherness, bringing members of different national communities together to socialise and have fun. This year we expect guests from nearby places and from abroad – Romania, Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia.

The event takes place on 29 March 2025, with 350 to 400 participants expected.
