🐎 Zobnatica Stud Farm – tradition, strength and legends
Founded in 1779 by the noble Vojnić family, the Zobnatica stud farm is one of the oldest and best-known stud farms in Serbia and the region. Set in an idyllic landscape beside the lake of the same name, Zobnatica is home to top horses that have won prestigious races across Europe. But beyond its sporting success and impressive facilities, the place also keeps a number of fascinating legends that give it a special soul.
🐴 The legend of Jadran II – the white hero horse
Jadran II was one of the most famous horses the stud farm ever had. He was believed to have a special bond with the old stable keeper who had cared for him since he was a foal. When the keeper died, Jadran was never the same. He spent his last days in sorrow and, legend has it, died leaning against the door of the stable where the two had spent so many years together. Locals believe his spirit can still be felt by the monument erected in his honour, in the silence before dawn.
🏆 The story of Kazanova – the unbeatable champion
Kazanova, a horse that dominated the racecourses, won 30 of his 33 races. He was so intelligent that he recognised his name and his trainer’s voice. When someone called him, he would turn his head and paw the ground, as if in greeting. To this day, an echo is sometimes heard in the Zobnatica stables, as if someone were quietly whispering “Kazanova” – and at that moment the horses stop, as if listening.
🌕 The secret of Lake Zobnatica
Lake Zobnatica, right next to the stud farm, has its own story. On moonlit summer evenings, older locals say, the shadows of galloping horses can be seen in the ripples on the lake. They believe these are the souls of all the champions who made this place famous, returning to guard their home.
🧙 The ghost of Béla Vojnić – founder of the stud farm
According to tradition, Béla Vojnić, the founder of the Zobnatica stud farm, never left the place. On cold autumn mornings, when fog settles over the stables, his figure is said to appear in the distance – calm and dignified, watching to see whether the horses and people are worthy of his legacy.

Today the Zobnatica stud farm is a tourist, cultural and sporting symbol of Vojvodina. Besides the stables and the racecourse, there is an equestrian museum, a hotel, a restaurant and many programmes for visitors. Yet what makes the place special is the invisible thread linking past and present – through legends, the whisper of hooves and the memory of those who loved and built this land.
