The Calvary stands on the highest point of Bačka Topola and dominates the view over the town centre, making it one of the town’s most important cultural and religious monuments. Although no original written records of its construction survive, the monument is known to have been erected in 1797 as a dedication to Golgotha of the New Testament, the place of Christ’s crucifixion. The Calvary thus carries deep spiritual meaning and bears witness to the centuries-old religious tradition of the area.
It is the oldest preserved structure in Bačka Topola. The chapel at the top of the hill and the Stations of the Cross were built at the end of the 19th century, completing the complex and marking the path of Christ’s Passion. Throughout the year, and especially on religious holidays, the Calvary becomes a place of quiet prayer, gathering and reflection, and thanks to its position it also offers a beautiful view of the town and its surroundings.
Today the Calvary is not only a spiritual symbol but also an important tourist attraction that invites visitors to discover the rich history and cultural heritage of Bačka Topola.
