Bački Sokolac

Bački Sokolac is a small village in the municipality of Bačka Topola, founded in 1921 on the former Bioseg estate, where Serbs from Lika, Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring regions settled. The colony was officially established in 1924 and was named after the land on which it was built, formerly owned by Countess Karátsonyi. Over the years the village saw various waves of settlement – after the Second World War returnees and war volunteers from Russia and America arrived, and later Serbian families from the war-affected Krajina. Today the village has about 380–480 inhabitants, mostly Serbs, and is known for its strong rural character and farming – livestock, field crops, vineyards, orchards and beekeeping are part of everyday life. The village lies on the Telečka Plateau, about 9 km from Bačka Topola, at an important crossroads of the roads to Sombor, Subotica and Novi Sad, giving residents good access to larger towns. Every year on 22 May the village celebrates its patron saint’s day, St Nicholas / Village Day, with a liturgy, the laying of wreaths at the monument to the Salonika Front volunteers and a community gathering, while the war volunteers’ associations keep alive the memory of the village’s founders and soldiers.
